General Learning Opportunities: First, you are going to implement the writing process to develop and revise a research project through the semester, and second, you will have the opportunity within that process to consider the rhetorical situationand the unique choices it presents for your research project.

 

Instructions: As we have discussed, the recursive writing process (invention, drafting, and revision) is flexible and allows you to approach writing projects in multiple ways. Find a topic from which you can develop an argumentative claim. I do have a short list of forbidden topics (see the bottom of the page). Otherwise, you may pick any subject you desire, whether serious or goofy, as long as you educate yourself on that issue and articulate a claim on that topic in a well-developed and ethical manner.

 

Research your topic. Once you have a topic (maybe even before), you will need to educate yourself about it through quality research. Research will also help in the development or revision of your claim/thesis statement.

 

Make decisions about the rhetorical situation of your research project.

Voice: What role do you want to play? How do you want the audience to perceive you?

Purpose: While the general purpose is persuasive or argumentative, you can have more specificor multiple purposes. For example, you can entertain or educate in addition to persuading.

Audience: While I am the person ultimately grading your research project, I will not be the audience for it. You are writing these projects as if you were going to publish them for a real audience, so who is that audience going to be?

Form:When writing to a teacher for a classroom assignment, one of the normal genres to use is the essay; however, you are not writing to me as your audience, so you will not likely use the genre of the essay. Instead, choose a quality genre and medium that is appropriate to your topic and audience.

 

Basic Requirements: As we learn more advanced material throughout the semester, I will provide a rubric giving the exact requirements for the research project. For now, the minimum goals are

  • An arguable claim/thesis statement
  • Data supporting your claim
  • At least five quality sources
  • Correct citations appropriate to the genre and medium
  • 1,600 to 2,500 words in length(roughly the equivalent of five to eight double-spaced pages)

 

The List of Forbidden Topics: Abortion; Same Sex Marriage; Minimum drinking limit; Legalization of drugs; Gun control; essentially the generic stuff.
