Purpose/Objectives: The purpose of this writing assignment is to stimulate analytical, critical, and reflective thinking.  It will help make you scientifically literate.  Verbal expression of one’s thoughts after reflecting on reference resources will improve your understanding of cardiovascular concepts in the classroom.

Upon completion of this case-study assignment, students should understand:

  • Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) and the factors that influence MAP.
  • The three hormone systems that regulate blood volume and pressure.
  • Left ventricle heart failure, its potential causes, and treatment

 

Based on the information students have gathered from the case study, hospital chart and lecture and laboratory about cardiac output, total peripheral resistance and volume and pressure regulating hormones students will be asked to write a paper.   The case study was developed for college-level pre-nursing, pre-med, biology, and physiology students. In order to answer the case study questions, students will need to have an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the heart, MAP, factors that affect MAP, cardiac output and total peripheral resistance.  Students will need to understand the three hormones which regulate blood volume, the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone-System (RAAS), antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin) and Atrial Natriuretic Peptide and Brain (ventricular) Natriuretic Peptide.  They will also need to have a basic understanding of heart failure.

 

Instructions/Tasks:

 

  1. Students will be given a hard copy and electronic copy of the case study in Blackboard. The case study will be given to students at the end of lab.  Students can work in groups to discuss the case study but must complete the case study questions individually.  No copying from each other.  The case study will be completed over a three-week period.  Students will need a computer to open the references.   The case-study will be worth 50 points. The instructor will facilitate the process.  The assignment will be graded on accuracy of answers to the questions including critical thing (students will receive a hard copy of the critical thinking rubric).

 

  1. Provide a cover page with the title of your article, your name, your course section and the date.

 

  1. Write a 5 to 6 page paper

 

  1. Use 1” margins, 12-point font and double spacing for your assignments. Points may be deducted for excessive spelling, grammar errors and messiness.  The paper may be turned in via e-mail or hardcopy at the start of class on the due date. Late papers will be subject to the late assignment policy.  If not received at that time they will be considered late and you will automatically receive a 50% reduction in points.  In order to receive at least 50% credit for the assignment, you must turn the work in via e-mail or to my office by 11:59 pm of the SAME DAY, that the assignment was due.  Any work received after this time will receive a 0.

To prevent this from happening, you are more than welcome to turn assignments in EARLY before the due date by e-mailing me and/or dropping it by my office.  Please take the time to be organized and complete the assignments on time!!!

 

  1. The paper must be typewritten or word processed, no handwritten assignments will be accepted.

 

  1. Outside Sources: Students must use outside sources to support and substantiate interpretation of information in the case-study.  Potential Sources to Find for Your Paper:  Magazines:  Discover, Science News, Popular Science, Scientific American;  Newspapers: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, Democrat and Chronicle;  Health Magazines:  Health, Women’s Health, Harvard Health Letter, Men’s Health;  Internet – reliable sources like WebMD, National Institutes of Health, FDA, any website that is not profiting from selling a personal product.You may use your textbook in addition to outside sources.

Remember to assess the article you plan to use with a critical eye:

  • Is the source reputable, such as a medical journal?
  • Is the author knowledgeable and expert?
  • What is the author’s motive for writing the article? Is it objective and without bias?  Is he working for a company that has a questionable reputation in the field?
  • Does the author substantiate their statements with data/statistics?
