100 POINTS (2 RESPONSES X 50 EACH)
PLEASE RESPOND TO TWO OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTSIONS. EACH RESPONSE SHOULD BE IN AN ESSAY FORM (INTRO, SUPPORTING PARAGRAPHS, CONCLUSION). PLEASE: CONSIDER CAREFULLY AND SPEND TIME CRAFTING YOUR THESIS AND ESSAY OUTLINE. YOUR ESSAY SHOULD BE AN ARGUMENT, IN RESPONSE TO A SCHOLARLY TRADITION AS DISCUSSED IN CLASS, NOT A “BULLET POINT LIST IN SENTENCE FORM”). PLEASE CITE SOURCES. EACH ESSAY SHOULD BE NO SHORTER THAN 1000 WORDS AND NO LONGER THAN 1250 WORDS.
EXAM IS DUE ON THURSDAY 12/11/20, 5 PM. PLEASE UPLOAD TO COURSE CANVAS SITE.
Please make sure you review all readings since the midterm before writing. We read many more texts in class than are mentioned in these prompts and sometimes you will find that readings that not “obvious candidates” are excellent sources for your essay.
1) How does the Marxist concept of primitive accumulation inform the more recent work on colonialism and imperialism? Please cite at least three of the following examples: Jay on Detroit, Dunbar-Ortiz on European settler colonialism of the Americas, Rodney on capitalism and Africa, Yates-Doerr and When the Mountains Tremble on Guatemala, Di Hu on the Andean highlands, Bevins on Indonesia.
2) What is social reproduction theory? Who were the European witches? How do the concepts of social reproduction and primitive/primary accumulation help understand witchcraft accusations?
3) How have non-European peoples and women resisted enclosure, colonialism, or imperialism?
Rubrics for each essay:
20 points: is the essay an argument, with detailed examples
coherently speaking to/supporting the argument? Or is it merely an incoherent summary of examples?
20 points: comprehension of the examples, arguments, etc., cited in the paper
10 points: is the essay clearly written and are sources cited? Has it been spell-checked? Is it sloppy(sentence fragments? Incorrect grammar, capitalization, etc.?)
