I need to discuss the negative effects of human trafficking on mental health using peer reviewed articles and the class readings I listed above It needs to address my thesis and argument. my thesis is: Although the human trafficking industry makes a large amount of money, it is inhumane and detrimental to enslave someone against their will for one’s own benefit. The violence of human trafficking has been a global issue for centuries to come; in addition, many women and children who are the prime targets suffer from depression, anxiety, and post traumatic stress disorder.

Human trafficking constitutes the exchange of humans for the use of forced labor, prostitution, or sexual exploitation. It is modern day slavery and millions of women and children are trafficked yearly worldwide. It is illegal and oftentimes neglected because many are not aware of the impact of this issue. People may wonder, “how does violence in human trafficking affect the victims mentally?” Although the human trafficking industry makes a large amount of money, it is inhumane and detrimental to enslave someone against their will for one’s own benefit. The violence of human trafficking has been a global issue for centuries to come; in addition, many women and children who are the prime targets suffer from depression, anxiety, and post traumatic stress disorder. Elevated levels of mental illnesses have been identified in previous research of female survivors. The peer reviewed article “Risk factors for mental disorders in women survivors of human trafficking: a historical cohort study” is a great background source because it provides information on the types of mental illnesses that victims suffer from. It is also a helpful data source because it includes the statistics and percentages needed. Another insightful peer reviewed source titled “The relationship of trauma to mental disorders among trafficked and sexually exploited girls and women” is helpful in providing statistics of high levels of PTSD from sexual violence amongst victims. It also presents information on the types of treatment and therapy needed for those who suffer from severe emotional distress. A class reading that relates to this contemporary problem is “The Epic of Gilgamesh” is a book which discusses the life and events of King Gilgamesh. This course reading is relevant to my research topic because Gilgamesh often times lure women in and rape them with his charm. Gilgamesh’s actions may help women identify the characteristics of a potential sexual predator.

According to the article “Risk factors for mental disorders in women survivors of human trafficking: a historical cohort study”, post traumatic stress disorder and depression are the two main mental illnesses that the victims suffer from in the country Moldova. This is a study done on women trafficking survivors at the age of 18 and above. Based on the study, it was concluded that “35.8% of women had PTSD (alone or co-morbid) and 12.5% had depression without PTSD” (Abas et al, 2013). Depression and PTSD is also the leading cause of suicide amongst young women. PTSD is the most common mental disorder suffered by individuals who have survived traumatic or life-changing events.
