Supporting yourself or supporting a family on minimum wage in New York state is not an easy task. I only made it to day-13 on the spent.org, getting a reality-check of how fast expenses add up in today’s economy. Some people rely on family for financial support while some people have no family to use that option. Substantial income is needed if you desire to live on your own and not go into debt. Many Americans barrow from friends and family to stay out of debt. Some Americans suffice by making some secondary income like having a yard sale as in the playspent.org exercise.

Cuomo said in 2016 that the minimum wage increases were designed to ensure New Yorkers can earn a decent living with a full-time job.

“The concept was we value work and if you work full time you should have a decent living. That was the concept of FDR,” Cuomo said… “You can’t raise a family on $18,000 a year in the state of new York.”

“Raising the minimum wage can be a stimulative factor for the economy….You give a person on minimum wage a raise, you know what they do? They spend it,” Cuomo said. “When you look at the past times when the minimum wage has been raised, the economy has actually increased. Employment has actually increased” (Herbert, 2019).

NY governor Cuomo referenced Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). He signed the Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938, setting the first Federal minimum wage of 25 cents per hour.

The NY Commissioner of Labor will declare by October 1, 2021, the minimum wage pay schedule annual increases to reach $15/hr for all Upstate NY minimum wage employees by 2024.

In 1968, the federal minimum wage was equal to just over half the wage of the typical U.S. worker: 52.8 percent of the median wage of all full-time workers. In 2018, the minimum wage is projected to be less than one-third of the wage of the typical worker: 32.4 percent of the median wage of all full-time, full-year workers (EPI, 2019). Americans being paid the Federal minimum wage are way overdue for a much needed increase in pay.

I agree with NY governor Cuomo that a person can not live on $18,000/yr. or $15,080 (52 weeks of income at the Federal minimum wage of $7.25/hr. We are way overdue for a Federal minimum wage increase. These wages need to raise proportionally over time and have not been increased on a national level since 2009. I encourage and support those that believe that the Federal minimum wage should be raised to $15/hr.

I think the minimum wage in our state should be $15/hr, because the minimum wage has not increased at the same rate that living costs have increased. There are many examples of the reasons for why the minimum wage should be increased to this amount. The minimum wage has not been increased nationally since 2009 which is still at $7.25 per hour (Toussaint, 2019). With this in mind, the minimum wage increased in 2007 and 2008 but has stayed stagnant since the increase in 2009. That does not make much sense from it being increased two years in a row then not having a change since. Cost of living, education, transportation, food, and leisure time have all increased plenty since 2009 as well. All of those aspects make it difficult for someone working only a minimum wage job to be comfortable in their lives so most would have to work more than one minimum wage job. If it was increased eventually by say 2024 there would be plenty of benefits for a lot of workers. By raising the minimum wage to $15 it would lift the pay for 40 million workers or 26.6 percent of the workforce (Sheet, 2019). Along with this there would be an increase in pay for two-thirds of the working poor which would be significant those in that bracket (Sheet, 2019). Raising the minimum wage for those workers is not a debatable topic it is a necessity especially in the current climate we are all living in in 2020.
