Write a 4-5 paragraph essay that examines how two stories from unit 3 treat one of the following topics:

Alcohol or drug use/abuse
Class struggle
Disabilities or deformities
Dysfunctional relationships
Generational differences
Immigrant experience
Indigenous, native people
Loneliness or loss
Racial inequality
Redemption
Roles of men
Roles of women
your own topic (approved by me first)

Writing Guidelines and Format:

Introduction:

Include a short introduction that leads up to a thesis that asserts a claim on how both works treat your chosen topic. Your thesis should demonstrate originality. (Use your own words to describe your own thoughts.)

Body Paragraphs:

Include at least two body paragraphs that compare/contrast the topic in both stories.
Use specific references to each text to support your ideas. This means you should not simply state that a theme or topic exists. You should show how it exists by referring to a specific detail in the text such as a plot point or action, a character, a description or setting, a back story, etc. When necessary, quote or paraphrase the story.

Conclusion:

End with a concluding paragraph that shows your readers why they should care about your ideas and topic.
Writing Tips:
Use clear, concise, descriptive wording.
Stay on topic; it’s easy to stray.
Avoid repetition.
Formulate your ideas before you begin your essay.
Compose your essay in Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or another word processing program and save your work often.
When you are ready, copy and paste your essay into the space provided. Once you paste your essay text, make sure you format it so that you have separate paragraphs.
Edit and proofread your essay before you submit it.
