Based on the readings in A Good Time for the Truth, They Say, I Say, and College Behind Bars, write a synthesis. You may use other sources if you wish.

You might use the synthesis in a broader discussion of racism in the criminal justice system, racism in the education system, or racism in Minnesota.

Basically, you will give an overview of the issue and clarify the positions through textual support of the various sources.

Examples of things you could discuss:

How the various stories increase your understanding of the topic
How the various statistics increase or add to your understanding of people’s stories
How the various sources relate to each other

Remember:

Intro – with some definition of the issue and a clear thesis
Begin each body paragraph of explanation that follows thesis with a clear topic sentence
In developing synthesis, draw on facts, examples, statistics, and opinions from your sources
You can also use your own experience

Guidelines:

4-5 pages, not counting your works cited page
Minimum of three sources
Use of quotations throughout essay (use of quote sandwich)
Clear transitions
Strong organization (thesis, topic sentences, unity of paragraphs)
