Pick five musical plays from this link on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdRT243YUxAsTi4Nbxcl2ylig1yHeuCs-
You must briefly discuss the historical background of each piece and composer–i.e. how it fits in with the music and eras that you have studied. Also, you should consider discussing forms, styles, and related works from your listening assignments when possible.
If you would like to describe the music, you may start with your opinions, but make sure to provide reasoning.
Bad: “I didn’t like the music, because it sounded bad.”
Good: “I didn’t like the music, because I sounded harsh to me. The melody was disjunct, and I found the leaping difficult to enjoy.”
While your opinion is an important part of this process and should be included in your essay, it should not be the sole focus of this essay. Stating that, “I liked the music because it was loud,” is not going to improve your grade. Be descriptive.
A primary focus of your essay should be on demonstrating your understanding of the music while using the objective terminology you have learned this far, e.g. melody, form, harmony, etc. However, do not attempt tuse terminology that you do not understand. We often have students incorrectly identify forms, textures, and other elements of the music, and this does not help your grade. To correct this, state your analysis as an opinion (e.g. I think that this movement was in sonata-allegro form…) and support your assertion with reasoning (…because I heard multiple themes in the opening and a development of those themes in the middle of the piece.) Always support your answer.
Comment on the etiquette of the concert. Did you know when it was appropriate to applaud? What was the intermission (sometimes called the ‘interval’) like? how formally were people dressed?
If you watched online, did you have a quality viewing experience? Did you watch an interview with the conductor or soloist? Did you watch the ‘Interval Talk,’ and if so, what more did you learn about the pieces?
If you are unfamiliar with the music or are having difficulty relating to it, feel free to compare it to music with which you are more familiar.
Discuss more than just the music. e.g. concert attire, etiquette, program notes, performers’ habits, etc.
It is OK to dislike some (or all) of the music, but at least try to figure out why some of this music has been popular for 300 years. If you have strong feelings (love or hate) for a piece of music, try relating to your favorite current music. How do they compare?
Of course, these are only guidelines, so feel free to include any information you feel is pertinent to the essay.
