Schedule the amount of time you’ll give to each essay and stick to it (e.g. 30 minutes per essay). If you have extra time at the end, you can click the “previous” button and go back to earlier essay questions.

  • You are permitted one opportunity to take the exam– whether you finish or not– do not leave the exam or hit “submit” unless you are finished.
  • You must complete the exam within 2 hours of starting. There is no resetting the exam for any reason.
  • The system will permit you to reenter the exam if the timer is still running. However, if you come back after 120 minutes from the time you began the exam, the timer will have continued to count and you will be out of time (i.e. the exam will be closed to you).

Be sure you’re in a distraction-free environment with both a reliable computer and internet when you begin. If you wait until Sunday evening to take the exam, please be sure to have a backup location to take the exam (perhaps a friend or neighbor’s home, or a coffee shop).

Getting Ready: Prior to beginning, you are asked to read and review the “Exam Weeks” section of the syllabus. It will help you know what to expect. This section also includes a link to exam essay preparation (Links to an external site.).

Anticipate writing a regular, college-level essay response. All four essays must be completed, which means studying in advance will help you use the time you’re given to do well.

Academic Honesty: All work and wording must be your own (work alone) and completed on your own: You may not share the essay questions with other students. You may not help write an exam response for someone else nor may you discuss exam questions with other students.

  • Any evidence that students have shared essay questions, worked together to write responses, or have discussed aspects of the exam (i.e. cheated) will be grounds for referral to administration for academic dishonesty (Links to an external site.) and will receive a 0 on the exam.
  • Any evidence of plagiarism (using another’s work as your own, or using your previously submitted work- excessively or without proper credit given) may also lead to referral and a 0 not he exam.
  • Please remember that the exam responses should be completely in your own words, so if you’re paraphrasing completely, plagiarism shouldn’t be an issue!
  • Please do all work yourself: neither of us wants to see you referred to administration.
  • The purpose of the exam is to determine what you’ve learned and, of course, what you write, and how you write it and support it (examples, concepts, evidence from course materials), are central to communicating your comprehension (it is, after all, an online course).

Tips: Plan and/or outline before writing

Once you’re in the exam and see your first essay question, plan/outline (Links to an external site.) what you will write by paragraph (intro, body paragraphs, and conclusion– what will be in each?); there is no need to type the outline in the exam, but it would help to write it on a sheet of paper nearby for easy access/reference as you write.

  • Rather than thinking about how long the essay should be, think about how well, clearly, and thoroughly you’ve answered the prompt- both with your introductory paragraph’s thesis statement and in support of that thesis statement throughout the body paragraphs.
  • Think through possible terms/concepts you’ll use, consider explaining what they mean, provide examples, and stay focused: Ask yourself throughout the writing process, “What is my thesis statement (Links to an external site.) and am I supporting it throughout the essay?”
