Part 1: In the first part of this task, students will be required to complete a critical analysis of TWO posters from a set developed to promote teacher awareness and understanding of First Australians. For each poster, you will select and define one of the concepts discussed in class and critically reflect upon how this particular concept relates back to the social and historical context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples depicted within your selected poster, using relevant literature to support your argument.
Part 2: Based upon the understandings generated in Part 1, you will provide an arts example created by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist whose work you feel addresses ONE of your selected concepts. You will identify the piece of work, provide a brief history of the artist*, and describe how the art example helps to illustrate your concept. You will also provide some brief discussion of an activity that depicts how you might use this arts example as a learning resource in your classroom.
Note: Must be from one of these concepts: Identity; Belonging; Colonisation; Deficit Thinking; Representation; Stereotypes; Respect; High Expectation
Arts examples could include one of the following: song; dance; poetry; spoken word; text; visual art forms: painting/sculpture, etc.
*If chosen work done by non-Indigenous aritsts, history should be focused on the ways in which the artist collaborated with Indigenous communities
