“As long as he has the right opinion about that of which the other has knowledge, he will not
be a worse guide than the one who knows.” This claim suggests that having true opinion is
not inferior to having knowledge. Does Socrates think that true opinion is not inferior to
knowledge?
“I am, I exist, that is certain. But how often? Just when I think; for it might possibly be the
case if I ceased entirely to think, that I should likewise cease altogether to exist.” How does
Descartes reach this conclusion in the Meditations?
Hume proposes a skeptical solution to the Problem of Induction, that is, the problem that
our knowledge of past experiences with such-and-such an object having such-and-such an
effect does not lead to knowledge that other similar objects will have similar effects. What is
Hume’s solution, and why is his solution a ‘skeptical’ one?
James argues that “Truth lives, in fact, for the most part on a credit system.” In your own
words, explain how James reaches the conclusion that truth is, in a sense, an honorific we
dub beliefs that are useful to us, much like how ‘health’ is often used as an honorific for
certain habits like going to the gym regularly.
