  1. A book review is not the same as a book report. A book report is simply the summary of a book. A book review is a critical review of a book. This includes a short summary and a longer critique of the material.
  2. A book review provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate your critical thinking skills, rather than a simple exercise in restating what the author already wrote.

Elements of a Book Review

  1. Thesis and Purpose: State the author’s overall thesis

and purpose for writing. If you are quoting the author, you must include proper citation.

  1. Summary: Provide a concise outline of the author’s main argument, identifying what evidence the author presents to support these arguments. This is your summary. You will be graded on your ability to synthesize all the pertinent information clearly, completely, and briefly. (1-2 pages)

Guidelines

  1. Critique: The next step is to write a critical analysis of the evidence that you previously identified. The critique is the heart of your review. For the sake of organization, think of about 3 points/themes upon which to analyze and critique the material and work to fully develop these points individually. You can also use/draw on issues and concepts we discussed in class as a basis for your review.

Themes

  1. You should be clear about the themes you are addressing as you will be graded on how you develop your analysis. For example, why do you consider a particular theme relevant or important to address. How does it fit into material you’ve learned in class? What is problematic or helpful about it and why?

Develop your points clearly. Include quotations from the text where they can help to make your point clearer.

Your Opinion

  1. Your review should include a brief description of your opinion of the book:
  • Is the book well written and organized ? How?
  • What did you like about the book or gain from reading it?
  • What are the shortcomings of the book in terms of advancing understanding on the topic?
  • What else do you think the author could have addressed to enhance/clarify the topic being discussed
  • Add your own flair. Let your voice be heard.

  1. Your review should be typed in size 12 font, one inch margins and 3-4 double spaced pages
  2. Remember to proof read your paper carefully to catch any spelling or grammatical errors before handing it in. In general, your review will be graded on how well the readings are understood and analyzed. Papers will be graded for clarity of expression, content, organization, creativity, and extent of analysis. It is assumed that correct spelling and proper formal grammar will be applied to all written assignments.
