Differences between closed- and open-ended questions

Discussiion Post 5

Begin your initial post by describing the difference between closed- and open-ended questions. In your description, consider how these types of questions are best used and for what purpose. What are some benefits of asking questions? What are some risks?
Next, choose one of the client stories (Jordan, Alicia, or Dominique) in Exercise 5.1 in Chapter 5. Based on the client’s story, list three examples of closed-ended questions and three examples of open-ended questions you might ask this client. For your open-ended questions, explain why you used the question stems you chose and the type of response you hope to gain from the client (e.g., factual information, general information, personal feelings, background reasons behind the situation).
Choose two of your classmates’ initial posts. Begin by reviewing the six questions they have listed for the client stories they chose. In your responses to your classmates, evaluate the questions they chose. In your evaluation, consider which questions could provide the most useful information. (Try to choose classmates’ posts that have no responses or just one response already posted so everyone isn’t replying to the same posts.) What could you improve?
In your initial post, be sure to include supportive material from the reading assignment with in-text citations and references in APA format. Your Initial post is by due 11:59 pm CT Thursday. Response posts are due by 11:59 pm CT Sunday.

Discussion Post 6
Begin your initial post by describing the difference between encouraging, paraphrasing, and summarizing. How do these skills relate to active listening?
Next, using the example in exercise 6.2, write three different key word encouragers, a restatement/encourager, a paraphrase with a checkout, and a summarization for both parts of the client story. (Note that the story is broken in two parts in exercise 6.2. Be sure to complete the same items for both parts.)
Choose two of your classmates’ initial posts. Begin by reviewing your classmates’ responses for the scenario in Exercise 6.2. In your replies to your classmates’ posts, evaluate the accuracy of the responses they have listed for Exercise 6.2. Rate their responses on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the highest accuracy). Explain what makes their responses accurate. If a response could be more accurate, explain how it could be improved. (Try to choose classmates’ posts that have no responses or just one response already posted so everyone isn’t replying to the same posts.)
In your initial posts, be sure to include supportive material from the reading assignment with in-text citations and references in APA format.
